Born in the northern Basque region of Spain, Ms. Mendieta holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain, and a Master's degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. She's worked as a radio reporter in Spain and for Spanish language newspaper in the U.S. She joined the Sun-Times in 1998 and has won numerous awards for her work.
